February Review

So far so good!

I've stuck with my resolution to run with a running club!

Now I'm back to running regularly again I felt that l I needed to try to increase my distance a little bit week by week so I've now started to do a full session with the club. Managing to keep up with them for 4 miles was one thing but taking on an extra few miles was tough.

It's a mental thing!

To give myself the confidence that I can do this without embarrassing myself I set myself the task of running on Fridays to push my distance a little. The first time I did a Friday run I only went out with the intention of getting out for a run. I wasn't intending to push my distance up. I made a slight mistake when I was checking my Garmin - I was keeping an eye on the calories burned NOT the distance I'd traveled!  My usual solo runs were around 3 miles and after that time I was getting a bit bored and fed up. Knowing I can do over 4 miles on a club night I kept on going and I'd decided I'd call a halt to my exploits at the 4.5 mark.  I was actually watching my calorific burn which was 453. When uploaded it to my computer I realized I'd made a mistake and I'd actually covered over 5.18 miles.  That was a nice surprise!

When I did my first full Wednesday session with the club we were a gnats whatsit away from base and it was very hard to run in the opposite direction to add more miles! I struggled but managed to finish at a run.

Running on my own means running at my own pace.
Running with the club means I have it in my head that I need to keep up.

In all honesty I'm not the slowest member of the group BUT some of them are training for the Lincoln 10k and I'm pretty sure that once that is over they'll fall by the wayside so I might find myself at the back of the pack again.

I DO NOT WANT TO BE THE SLOWEST IN THE CLUB!

Doesn't look too steep - try running over it!
The second full Wednesday session was hard in other ways. Rather than doing a figure eight which gives us the chance to bail out and head back we headed well away from the leisure center and towards the middle of town.  It wasn't until we got onto the high street that it dawned on me that we had a hill to go back up!  The hill in question starts at the university roundabout and it was an upward jog over the university bridge then onward up Yarborough Road. This is a hill which looks like it's not a problem at all when you drive up it in a car.  Running up it is quite another matter!  It just goes on and on and on and just when you think you've reached the top it goes on a little bit more!  However, the good news is - I managed to run ooohhh so very slowly to the top and didn't die in the process!

So, what of March?

I hope to continue running and remain injury free. I had wanted to increase my distance and maybe work towards doing half marathons.  I'm having a rethink on that.  Finding the time to do that sort of distance isn't easy. Finding the time to do 6 or 7 miles isn't easy.  I think I'll be content to run 2 or 3 times a week covering 3 to 7 miles each run.

Watch this space...

Thanks for catching up with me again
