Injury - There And Back Again...

Sweat is just pain leaving the body!!

My body must be in agony when I run then!

After a month off injured I set off again on my half marathon training. It seems that since the end of August I've barely done any running at all - what with my holiday to Portugal and then with my foot being injured.  And all the while I've been hitting the self destruct button (so to speak) by eating and drinking crap and generally not taking as much care as I should of myself.  However, This past couple of weeks I've been building up to "Captain Slow - The Return!"

WEEK 6 DAY 1
5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
40 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

I looked at this and thought - 40 minutes jogging - that's a nice way to ease myself back into jogging!   FOOL!  24 hours after doing this workout my legs hurt like you would not believe!  It's amazing how quickly your body forgets how to cope!

WEEK 6 DAY 2
5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
40 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

After a few days of aches and pains I got back onto it on Wednesday morning.

He-Who-Must-Be-Ignored was in work early so I managed to get a nice long walk in with my dogs before setting off on this workout.   For the first 2 or so miles  everything was going really well. I felt much better than I did on my previous workout and even had to hold back on my speed so I didn't  end up burning myself out.  I have a 10.44 minute mile but could easily have gone under 10 minutes if I'd allowed myself to, however my moto is slowly gets the distance done!   They don't call me Captain Slow for nothing you know!
At around the 2.5 mile mark I felt a slight twinge in my right foot, exactly where I've been injured recently.  Now, today I had two heads on my shoulders.  Stupid Head (which was carrying Pillock Brain in it) was saying - nah - tis merely a twinge - ignore it, carry on, you're doing great!
So I did!
For a couple of hundred yards.

Then Sensible Head with Smart Brain on-board said, Actually Netty - this is what you did last time and you ended up out of action for a month.  Do you REALLY think it's wise to continue?

Stupid Head pipes up - don't be a wimp!  It's nowhere near as painful as last time - it'll be fine - carry on!

Sensible Head reminded Stupid Head that last time I was injured it started off as just a little twinge and as I was too stupid to stop running things just got worse and worse and worse!

Stupid Brain knows that Sensible Brain is right - which galls Stupid Brain, who reluctantly tells my feet to stop running!

I walked for quite a while but then thought I'd have a little jog.  Apart from my foot hurting everything else feels just fine which is just infuriating!   Although this seems like just a twinge I know it can develop into something worse if I don't stop jogging and putting strain on it - so I drop down to walking again.  Sensible Head is soothed by this but all the while Stupid Head keeps saying - have a little jog - it might just be a blip... it might not be as bad as you think.... and so I walked and jogged and walked and jogged until I realised that, actually, Sensible Head is right.  I HAVE TO STOP JOGGING and allow my foot to rest.

So, dear reader, it looks as though I'm going to take at least 2 weeks off from jogging again.  At this rate I'll never achieve my ambition to run a marathon before I die!   Pfft, I can't even get close to a half marathon!  *sulk*

Tried to comment earlier but blogger.com got grumpy.... anyways, it's a cliche, but this running lark is not a sprint, it's a, er, marathon. Slow and steady, and you'll get there! :-)
