Which Head Am I Wearing This Week?

No running stats for me this week as I've got nothing to report!

My Frustrated Head is sitting on my shoulders right now, carrying my getting Smarter Brain!   At least I suspect it's getting smarter because said Smarter Brain has decided that next time I'm running and I feel a pain that doesn't go away after a half mile or so it will send the STOP signal to my feet - and the RING HOME FOR A LIFT signal to my fingers and all might be better than it is right now!

So, as I've mentioned - this week I've dusted down my Frustrated Head. I've also dusted down my Anxious Head - and I'm wearing both of these - mostly at alternate times but now and again they both appear on my shoulders at the same time  - which must look rather odd!!

My Frustrated Head is one that I don't wear too often as I'm usually on a fairly even keel and nothing much really phases me in my day to day life.  I tend to take things in my stride - only now and again getting frustrated. This week I'm feeling utterly frustrated at the apparent lack of healing that's going on with my foot.  Even walking my dogs in the morning is a struggle, although I'm finding that it feels ok during the day when I'm working even though I'm on my feet all the time. This is probably because I'm trying to walk faster when I'm out with my dogs. Pottering about doing housework for people is a nice slow moving job - no strain there!

As for my Anxious Head - well this one usually (but not exclusively) comes out of the cupboard when things are going on in my life that I feel I have no control over or things that involve authority! Anxious Head carries Stressed Brain in it! This week my Anxious Head is out for an airing because I'm probably consuming more calories than is good for me - not only that but I'm craving chocolate and sweet stuff!  Anxious Head keeps whispering about putting on weight - something that I don't really need to worry too much about when I'm running.  So I'm feeling very anxious about when I'll be running again!

As I've stated numerous times before. I run so I can eat cake, drink beer and not get fat!

I'm not keen on this non-running state that I'm in at the moment!  Not keen at all!   Stressed Brain has decided to send signals to my back/shoulder - this always happens when Stressed Brain is in control!  So not only do I have a foot that's playing up, I'm now suffering pain in my left shoulder. I think I might have to bite the bullet and pay another £32 to go and get Nichole at the Newland Chiropractic Clinic to torture me again this week to see if she can put things right!   I think running takes away a great deal of my stress as I've not been troubled with my back/shoulder for months.   What an utterly crap state of affairs!

So, currently I have BOTH HEADS out - but I'm mainly wearing the Frustrated one!

My friend Adrian, who isn't allowed to run because of injury at the moment  has my full and complete sympathy!

Hopefully I'll be able to start 13:1 Week  6 soon!

Thank you dear reader for taking the time to view my moaning groaning blog this week.  Fingers crossed for a more upbeat report next week!

The Lincolnshire Runner

This week I thought it was about time I got some proper advice about my trainers. When I first got my treadmill and started to workout out on a regular basis I was jogging in some crappy cheapo Asda trainers (You know the type - £5 for a dozen pairs and 12 pairs of socks thrown in for free!?)   No point spending shed loads of money on something that's going to be a flash in the pan!

Tired Old Lonsdale Trainers
They were swiftly  replaced by some Lonsdale trainers which, if I'm honest, were about as much use as a fart in a wind tunnel!  The ones from Asda were probably better!  As far as I was concerned a trainer was a trainer and the less money I had to part with for them, the better!  Apparently a trainer is NOT a trainer - it is far more than that - and my Lonsdales were just fashion trainers (hmm.. not exactly high fashion but hey ho!)  Please Do Not Judge Me -  I chose them because they had nice lilac bits on them and looked quite pretty and didn't make my feet look huge! (very important thing to consider that is, how they look!)

Grubby and Well Used
I have been into sports shops in the past... usually to buy sports stuff for He-Who-Must-Be-Ignored - golf shoes, balls, trainers - the usual sort of thing. The first time I walked into a "proper" sports shop to make a purchase for myself was when I went to buy my New Balance trainers! They have been good but I just wasn't sure they were what I needed and they've covered quite a few miles in the past few months, both walking jogging and cycling.
Surprisingly I've covered some 623.41 miles (according to my stats on Endomondo) since 16th April 2011.  By then I was already 4 weeks into my couch to 5k training program.  Anyway, back to my foray into a sports shop for the first time....
The guys in the sports shop (which shall remain nameless) were very well trained - at going to the store room and bringing out trainers in various sizes and colours.  Not once did they offer any advice and to be honest I was too scared to ask - I didn't want to look like an idiot so I did what lots of we ladies do - picked a pair I liked the look of, white with nice pretty pink bits.   Luckily for me they've been a great pair of trainers. Once upon a time they looked all shiny and clean and beautiful. Now they look like a pair of well loved, well used trainers!

Not only do I write my own little blog, I also read lots and lots of blogs. I follow links from those blogs to other blogs and from there I visit other blogs via links. I'm getting quite addicted to reading about other people adventures, mishaps and triumphs!  One such blog was by a lady who'd gone to a "proper" running shop to get fitted out with her new trainers - and so the seed was sewn...

Not only do I read blogs - I've also been trawling t'interweb lurking on discussion boards and such like and saw a posting on Runners World about The Lincolnshire Runner - which is a small shop on my local high street. The poster was saying how good they were at The Lincolnshire Runner - helpful, know their stuff and all that kind of thing!

Feeling brave, because I'm now a fully fledged runner who can jog outside in the wind and rain, and smile in the face of adversity, I informed He-Who-Must-Be-Ignored that we were going to get up nice and early on Saturday morning and head into town to said Lincolnshire Runner shop, which we duly did!

This is a small shop! The bottom of the door is reinforced with what looks like a steel plate - hmmm... looks like it's a nice area we're in here!   Pushing open the door  we entered the Shop Of Dreams...   I was relieved to see a granny like lady behind the till and a couple of younger guys paying great attention to a guy who'd brought his son in to be fitted for a pair of trainers.   Suddenly I felt as if I really didn't belong here where people who were runners might come!    Too late!  Guy number two asked if he could help, and then it was in for a penny in for a pound time!

I explained that I thought it was about time I got a new pair of trainers and I thought it was a good idea to get some help in choosing them from somebody who might actually know what it was I need! He enquired about the type I was using now (thank goodness I already knew they were New Balance so I didn't look a complete twit!) Then he wanted to know which particular ones they were?  Pfft, - they're white with pink trim I blurted - how on earth would I know what particular ones they were!?  I only bought them because they looked pretty, were the right price (and had been further reduced) and didn't make my feet look huge!!  He sort of gave me a wry look and informed me that he'd get me a pair of neutral trainers to try on so he could see how I ran.

Now, at about this time BIG alarm bells started to ring.

See how I ran.... now what's THAT all about.   Luckily for me I'd popped a pair of socks into my bag so I could pop them on when I was trying on the trainers. (so at least I scored a brownie point for coming prepared!)  To my shame they were PINK!  I smiled sheepishly at the guy as I popped them on.

Strapped into some neutral trainers I was led past a bemused He-Who-Must-Be-Ignored and into Lincoln High Street sporting my black skinny (tighter than skin) jeans and my purple Sex And Drugs And Sausage Rolls t-shirt!

Ohhh I looked every inch the runner!

What sort of running do you do and how much running do you do, the helpful guy enquired.  Ohhh,  about 3 miles a day (which is sort of the truth) BUT I'm trying to build on that.  Treadmill, pavements and grass. I've not been running long I admitted.  I only run so I can burn calories and eat cake and chocolate and not get fat (being truthful is always best I think)  He nodded, pointed to some railings a little way up the road and said - off you go - run to them and back and off I went!

Now, last night I was at the pub. It was darts night, and although I didn't drink too much I obviously drank enough. My lower back was  twinging and running in strange trainers is also a worry.  I was thinking OOohh please don't let me trip over these pavement cracks and make a complete show of myself!  As I completed my jog and arrived back at the guy who seemed to know all and it seemed only right to utter some immortal words to excuse my crappy jogging style and my Captain Slow technique.

I have a bit of a hangover I blurted...

He nodded in a neutral but almost sympathetic manner.  Not too bad at all but your left foot turns in a little he stated. When you get injured is it on your left side?  Hhmm... well, yes actually it is - I have a dodgy knee right now I admitted.  He nodded again. We can get your some running shoes that will be just right for you...   (suddenly he was elevated to God-Like status!)

Now, obviously he'd been taking note of what I said when I first walked in the shop because he pointed to a particular running shoe (notice I'm now calling it a running shoe and not a trainer?!) and asked if I liked that colour!   Pfft - I'm not bothered about the colour I declared - I just want a shoe that is good for my feet.  (secretly I cared very much about the colour but I wasn't going to admit to that!)  He nodded. Apparently hopeful that I wasn't a lost cause.   Once again I found myself strapped into a strange pair of running shoes. Size 5. Too small. Size 5.5. Too small!  Size 6 - ahhh just right!  And that's when I found myself out in the street again, jogging towards those railings and wishing that I'd had the good sense to wear a sports bra - and also thanking  my inner woman for deciding to wear a bra at all this day!

Purple with bright pink laces. Lovely!
Purchase complete I was informed by an older gentleman  in the shop that the trainers I'd purchased were Special Edition - only available through smaller outlets like theirs.  I beamed - that's good to know, I said,  I'll be sure to mention that when I blog the days events later today.

And so it was that 40 minutes after walking into The Lincolnshire Runner I stepped back outside with my newly purchased running shoes in my arms and leaving several bemused shop staff in my wake...

13.1 - Training - Week 3

WEEK 3 DAY 1
Sunday 7th August 2011

5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
20 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

Busy day  with the Dukes visiting so after a rather late night I had to be up nice and early to get my run done. This morning I tried out my new Best Friend out for the first time - it's good to have my music back on an ipod instead of on my phone.

WEEK 3 DAY 2
Tuesday 9th August 2011

5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
25 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

Bright sunny day but still nice and cool - around 54*f  this morning when I started out on my warm up walk.  Today I tried out my new 13.1 Training app which I've downloaded to my ipod.  I get to play one of my Playlists and the app cuts in over the music and tells me when to walk and jog. This has got to be easier than having a bit of paper threaded into my heart rate monitor?   Nice simple to use app. Gentle lady's voice cuts in to tell me that I'm expected to do my warm up walk, then cuts in 5 minutes later to tell me to jog, then 25 minutes later she tells me that I can do my cool down walk.  Only criticism - the voice over is a little bit too quiet even though I have my ipod on at a comfortable level - it's still loud enough to hear though, but could just do with tweaking up a little.  Had a couple of pep talks from Adrian while I jogged. Pep talks really do work wonders, they focus my mind, keep me amused and lighten my steps because I know I'm not on my own. Many thanks Adrian for joining me this morning!  :)    NOTE TO SELF: must try to think of some amusing things to say when I do my next lot of pep talks to Adrian and Janet!

Ah, and last but not least - my stats for the day:

WEEK 3 DAY 3
Wednesday 10th August 2011

5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
10 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE WALK
15 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

Lovely cool day today. 54*f  as I started my run. Cloudy and dull with light drizzle. Perfect for jogging - kept me nice and cool!  Lots of people were out with umbrellas - GET A GRIP people of Lincoln!  It's a bit of RAIN not sulphuric acid!  ;)  Had to take a bit of care as the pavements were a little bit slippery but overall a very good day to jog.  My legs felt reasonable. I notice that my legs no longer feel heavy at the start of my jog.  A few weeks ago they really protested at the start of my jog and took a half mile or so get settle down and feel ok.  I'm not sure when this heavy feeling at the start of my jogging ended. I've only just noticed!

Quote From The WomenRunningTogether.com:
Running is a state of mind. The only thing that determines your success, or lack of success, is the way you think about your running. If it works for you – if it relieves stress, burns calories, gives you time to yourself, enhances your self-esteem – then it doesn’t matter what any other person or any stopwatch says about your running.

WEEK 3 DAY 4
Thursday 11th August 2011

5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
25 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

Today it absolutely pissed piddled it down on me!  Not right from the start you understand...not at the point when I could have said - Sod it, I'll use my treadmill, but later.....

I set off walking - it's surprising how far my little leggies can take me in 5 minutes, then when the nice lady on my app commanded I started to jog - a little splash or two of rain fell onto my arms.  Not to worry I thought - it's only a bit of rain... so on I jogged as the rain continued to fall, until it was tipping it down and I thought - hmmm... I'm getting rather wet here!  By this time I was too far away from home to turn tail and go back (Man up Netty - it's only a bit of rain - NOT sulphuric acid!)  so I endured enjoyed my workout in the rain today!  I got some very strange looks but what the heck - I'm pretty sure that people were just jealous of my couldn't give a shit hoot attitude!  The only thing that spoiled it for me today was worrying about my New Best Friend and whether it was staying safe and dry in it's little pouch under my top (I have it round my waist now - NOT against my skin after killing my ipod classic off with Death By Sweat) but as the rain came down I was wondering how I'd explain murdering my New Best Friend off so soon after killing off my Previous Best Friend.....

WEEK 3 DAY 5
Friday 12th August 2011

5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
15 MINUTE JOG
8 MINUTE WALK
15 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

Another early start for us today as He-Who-Must-Be-Ignored was out of bed at 5am as he needed to be in work for overtime.  It was quite dark this morning. A combination of the time of the year (night lingering longer into the morning) and it was an overcast morning - no sign of the sun!  I was surprised that the temperature was 60* when I set out on  my workout and it was rather humid (86%)  :(    Not fun to jog in when it's humid.  Today I forgot my chewing gum too - which I find helps me concentrate and keeps my mouth nice and moist.  I was truly Captain Slow today. My first mile was particularly slow and I didn't seem to be able to pick up the pace at all.  My thighs ached a little but I'm surprised that my lungs cope so well with the running, as well as my heart (touch wood it remains that way!)  This morning I met a chap I do some work for who was walking his dog (and for a change I was on a jogging interval not a walking interval) and do you know what, I didn't feel self concious or embarrassed in the slightest. I actually felt rather proud of myself as I jogged past and bid him Good Morning.  Not too many weeks ago I would have cringed in horror at the thought of even seeing a STRANGER never mind somebody I know well!  So, despite the weather, the lack of chewing gum, the aching legs and a few other niggly bits - I still enjoyed my workout  - BUT I'm really looking forward to having a day off tomorrow!

WEEK 3 DAY 6
Sunday 14th August 2011

5 MINUTE WARM UP WALK
40 MINUTE JOG
5 MINUTE COOL DOWN WALK

Yesterday was a day off  and I was looking forward to today's run with quite some considerable trepidation! I've never run for 40 minutes outdoors before, add to that the fact that yesterday I was at the wedding of our very dear friends Martyn and Paula. - 9.30 kick off followed by rather too much champagne on an empty stomach, followed by a huge dinner and lots of g&t followed by more food and more drinks then more food and drinks... you get the picture....?
I'd already posted onto FaceBook that I wasn't going to run this morning - however, when I got out of bed I felt bally marvellous!  Not hung over at all! (which left me feeling rather amazed considering how much booze I managed to throw down my neck yesterday!) hic   After messing about for an hour or so trying to decide if I'd do my running today I did finally get my arse in gear and get on with it!  I gave He-Who-Must-Be-Ignored instructions on how to check where I was at any given time using Endomondo and even suggested he might like to pep talk me (he's not a very technical sort of a chap so this is like blinding him with science and asking him to perform a minor miracle!)  I also instructed him NOT TO SAY ANYTHING RUDE as his pep talks would be available for anyone to see!   My intention was to skirt into the local park (which was the scene of an assault on a lady recently - hence I wanted Himself to know exactly where I was) then onto the estate where I feel much safer.  However, when I got down to the park it was heaving with dog walkers, joggers, regular walkers, volunteer litter pickers and all manner of other folks. I felt confident that I would never be too far away from help if I got into difficulty so I spent most of my jog down there.   Jogging around Hartsholme County Park is so lovely - it's such a shame that I don't feel confident enough to go there on a more regular basis.   It was a very bright and sunny morning - temperature around 68* and humidity at 72%.  Under the canopy of the trees it was fairly comfortable but I did struggle today.  My ankles and calves were playing up... probably because I was trotting around in high heels yesterday.  Add that to eating and drinking far too much yesterday (even though I didn't actually have any outward symptoms of my debauchery) PLUS running for the longest time I've ever had to run outdoors and I struggled with this workout.  Thank goodness for pep talks.   One of them went something like this:

Pep Talk From Adrian: Morning Netty, how's those legs after a night of drinking?

Netty: (replying apparently to thin air in a rather loud voice) Bloody awful Adrian and Thanks for asking!

At this point one of those volunteer litter pickers came into view from some bushes where he'd been working and gave me the oddest look...

Netty to Litter Picker:  (big grin) I'm not talking to myself - really I'm not   (sheepish grin)

Now, I could see how much I'd struggled when I saw how many calories I'd burned (tiredness or feeling unwell or other similar thing that makes me feel a little under par always = burning more calories)  I used a whole 155 calories more than my previous workout - which can't all be explained by the extra time I spent jogging!

Today's Stats Are:
Duration Calories Av. ♥ Max ♥ Distance Walk Speed Running Speed Venue
50 mins 455 151 167 4.01miles * * Outdoors

I suspect I'm going to drop my workouts down to every other day from now on as this will fit in better with my lifestyle.  Actually, I'm going to play it by ear!  If I fancy a run and I feel that I have time to get it done every day then I will do so - however,  if I think I've not got the time to do it - or if my legs don't feel up to it then I will SKIP A DAY AND NOT FEEL GUILTY!

Catch you in Week 4.....    :)
